We're only in this as volunteers to let Toontown live a little bit longer. We aren't, though, because we know that a lot of people put tons of hard work into Toontown over at Disney, and they deserve the real credit. If we were accepting donations, taking in profits, and trying to steal Disney's profit? That's absolutely horrible. Is it wrong to replicate a game using Disney's assets? Personally, we don't think so. Disney was unable to sustain Toontown as a business venture, and that's why we want to sustain it as a gift to the Toontown community. We're not in this for money or fame - We're in this because of kids like Charlie, their parents, and YOU who genuinely loved the game and want it to continue. We make absolutely no profit whatsoever and will refuse any donations given.
TWITTER TOONTOWN REWRITTEN FREE
Is that wrong?Īs mentioned above, Toontown Rewritten is completely free to play. I guess I just assumed they had permission but the idea of Disney giving them permission sounds a bit un-Disney-like.Īlso, I found what they said on their official website: In the end, only Disney knows whether Toontown Rewritten, and other Disney game emulators will continue to live. This is directly against the Minecraft Terms of Use, however it wasn't acknowledged by Mojang that this was done. It was distributed in the Bukkit software.

TWITTER TOONTOWN REWRITTEN SOFTWARE
They used a part of the official server software code to run the server. Bukkit, what used to be commonly used server software for Minecraft, was developed by a 3rd party. Mojang turns their back to this, they don't acknowledge that their code is being decompiled.
TWITTER TOONTOWN REWRITTEN MODS
Minecraft modding is a very important part to the game's success, but to make very in depth mods modders NEED to be able to read the decompiled, unobfuscated code (not encrypted, readable by a human). I do not know of anything that Disney has personally turned their back to, but a game I follow closely, Minecraft has. However you could make the argument that TTR follows Disney's user rules for chatting and behaving in their game. In this sense it doesn't look to good for emulators. These emulators don't last long, Disney is quick to shut them down. The main appeal of these emulators is to be able to say whatever you want in chat and not being banned, as well as bringing back old rooms from the old days of Club Penguin. In the end it is completely up to them whether or not they turn their backs to this, as it stands now, they have not taken any action against any Toontown project, but in the end they have the final say.Ĭlub Penguin, DIMG's major source of income and only MMO, has a many emulators, despite it being a flourishing game that doesn't look like it will end anytime soon. Disney could turn their backs to this, and let it happen, pretending they don't know of it. They would not be allowed to do so, it is directly against the Terms of Use, the legal stuff.

That being said, asking for permission to use the property of Disney for Toontown Rewritten would get them nowhere. However some companies may turn their backs to this and let it happen. ~ ToonTown Rewritten is fully released tomorrow (September 19, 2014) and so it will be quite interesting to understand whether Disney will pounce upon the emulator eventually or accept the legitimacy of such an emulator despite a year-long effort of challenges.ĭisney, or any company of that scale, would never give permission for a small, unheard of, 3rd party to take what they have already constructed and build it up again, or make it better. As such, it is imperative that ex-POTCO players themselves remain up-to-date concerning how Disney reacts to the progression of ToonTown Rewritten hence, this thread's main purpose. Therefore, I feel that circumstances surrounding the emulator ToonTown Rewritten could possibly be used as an example (a 'guinea pig' kind of project essentially for those emulator projects currently in development for the entertainment of the ex-POTCO community. ToonTown Online, a past intellectual property (IP) of Disney/Disney Interactive now, was shuttered in much the same way and on the same day as Pixie Hollows and POTCO. Oye! Not too long ago online, I shared with a few trusted individuals here the below article concerning the MMO emulator, ToonTown Rewritten: When something is said to be used as a " guinea pig," this means that the results of something unprecedented has yet to be tested (thereby serving as a 'benchmark' for the future progression and understanding of similar/alike projects).
